First, there is the NBA or the National Basketball Association, which is basically where fantasy basketballis based. The NBA is a men’s professional league and the league is based in North America. There are 30 teams or franchise members of the league. Twenty-nine of the teams are based in the United States of America while there is one Canadian team. The NBA is one among four of the major North American leagues and one of the most popular, not to mention lucrative. The other games that have a fantasy sports version are Major League Baseball or the MLB, the National Football League or the NFL and the National Hockey League which is also called the NHL.

The NBA started in 1946 and was then based in New York City. Today, it is a billion dollar industry and has its own NBA Entertainment and NBA TV studios which are the outfits that promote and make merchandise for the league, among other things. The Office of the NBA is found in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The fantasy basketball aspect of the NBA is based on the much older fantasy baseball game. At first, fantasy basketball was not based on the stats in the NBA. The game has boomed to popular culture in the 90s and it has gotten even bigger because of the Internet, far reaching more people today than ever before. Fantasy players were usually called general managers or GMs. These general managers are the ones who draft real life NBA players and they do the computation of the NBA basketball stats. The game was further boosted to popularity when giant sports networks and the NBA made it official and covered fantasy sports.
