If you are a great fans of Microsoft Office user, you should be very familiar with the Microsoft Excel’s menu bar with File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Data, Windows, Help, which has been exists since very early versions.
Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to completely abandon the menu bar which they have been using for two decades. As a result, Microsoft redesign the most of the Office Applications since Office 2007. So, you will notice that the Microsoft Office’s graphic user interface has been drastically changed to a new concept, which is called Ribbon.
Of cause there are many reasons behind this. One of the consideration in Microsoft Excel case is that the Excel pros realized that Excel is a powerful spreadsheet software with a lot of features. It is not easy for a beginner to navigate and remember all the features located in the menu bar.
Excel 2007 is the best new version of Excel since Excel 97, with the ribbon at the top of application itself. The ribbon is comprised of icons and words group into tabs. Most of the editing commands are located as icons on the Home ribbon. These icons are grouped into groups according to their functionality.
The group boxes can be automatically resize according to the windows size of Office applications. If user resize the Excel to a smaller windows for example, then the group boxes will be smaller hence less icons will be shown. In order to access the icons have been hidden, user can click on a tiny icon showing the diagonal arrow located at the lower right corner of the group.
There are a lot more interesting features in the Ribbon. The main reason Microsoft introduce the Ribbon is to improve the user experience on the Microsoft Office Products. Try to explore more on Office applications such as Excel, Words and PowerPoint and I am sure that you will find a lot of great tools to improve your productivity.
